We are being pummeled by the presumption that this new “reform” of the Gender Recognition Act is necessary, proper, and overdue. But we’ve yet to find out how or why this is so necessary. At Butterflies & Wheels, Ophelia Benson notes how carefully the wording is used to reflect that all of this should be an obvious step, and the BBC never reports on why this change is so fundamental. The Scots are intent on simplifying and speeding up the process by which men get their “Woman License.”
But, we’re still not told how or why it’s necessary to secure anyone’s human rights, nor even what rights those are. Here I’ve been asking why, and for what need unfulfilled is the rush meant to correct. But we still get no answers, and women in Scotland are told to wheesht, or rushed from the gallery when even the demand to review GRC’s for convicted sex criminals is voted down by their Parliament.
Let’s go back to Jurassic Park, shall we? If you recall, the character Ian Malcolm was invited to tour the park before its opening, and after the power had been shut down due to Newman’s1 chicanery, nagged John Hammond with the line:
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they never stopped to ask whether they should.”
We can modify this a bit now to read “Your politicians were so preoccupied with whether they could, they never stopped to ask whether they should.”
Absent explanations for why this is an issue that the SNP has chosen this issue over the one for which their constituents originally elected them, independence from the UK, the debate over the new laws is nearly over and their decision made. There was no room for listening to anyone who countered their glorious purpose. They chose as their advisors a series of Yes-Men (and I don’t really need to change that to yes-persons because the purpose served here is that of men.)
As leaders advance, they often grow increasingly distant from the people they are nominally leading and come to rely on a shrinking circle of close advisors. This can be effective if those advisors are willing and able to articulate a variety of viewpoints and data, especially when those views and data conflict with their boss’ thinking; however, it can handicap a leader if that leader pushes them toward becoming yes-men.
I can’t say that I can name anyone from Scottish politics in particular that is advising the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, on the need for a rapid approval of this measure for “reform.” I am not enough of an expert on their affairs.2
This seems to be pushing them headlong into the chaos. They have had warning that the ensuing chaos will have a negative effect on women and children for a variety of reasons, but they choose to ignore and stonewall anyone who does not wish to see this reform passed and become law.
Women in Scotland do not accept that they should be ignored. Here’s one reason:
A murderer who changed gender is demanding to be treated as a baby by prison staff.
Sophie Eastwood was formerly known as Daniel and was jailed for life in 2004 for strangling a cell-mate with shoelaces.
The killer has now told the prison governor at Polmont jail that she wants to identify as a baby, wear nappies and have meals blended like baby food.
Eastwood has also demanded that prison officers hold her hand when she is escorted from her cell.
It is understood that prison bosses are treating the demands seriously and considering which protocols might be established in dealing with the prisoner.
If you wish to see more, JL from the Glinner Update has made a nice list for us.
Ian Malcolm was brought in too late for Hammond to benefit from his knowledge. It would have made the book and movie shorter and pointless, of course, but the time to listen to the contrarians is before the chaos breaks loose. After the monsters have been unleashed on the world, all that the contrarians can do is to say “Here’s why what you did was wrong.”
Dunja Mijatovic doesn’t explain why this is an urgent human rights matter, we’re just supposed to accept this presumption as a self-evident fact. If Scotland’s Parliament were to listen to the Contrarians, the chaoticians, the women, then they would have to actually look into what a gender identity is. They would find, quite literally, nothing.
Wayne Knight gained fame as Jerry Seinfeld’s postman nemesis, Newman, in the TV show “Seinfeld.” The character he plays in JP, Nedry, messed with the electric power in Jurassic Park for money. This was the chaotic event that couldn’t have been tightly controlled in Jurassic Park, setting up the central conflict of the plot.
Just on general principle that Scotland should be independent of the UK, for a variety of reasons none of which includes any sort of ancestry, I donated enough money to the newly formed Alba Party to be registered as a Charter Member. I have a pin and a pen stamped “Alba” for my money.
